Index checker FAQ
Published · By IndexChex
An index checker tells you whether Google has a URL in its index. Owners get the most detail from Search Console's URL Inspection tool; anyone can use site:, quoted-URL and inurl: searches; and bulk checkers run those searches across large lists. No public method is perfect, so negative results deserve a second check.
These answers are short by design. Each links to a fuller page in the handbook. Start with how to check if a URL is indexed for the full decision path between methods, or bulk index checking when the list runs into the hundreds or thousands.
For the tool made by this site's publisher, see the IndexChex index checker page. Accuracy questions are covered in more depth on index checker accuracy and why index checks disagree, and timing on how often to re-check indexation.
Owner and non-owner methods at a glance
The split that decides most answers is access. With Search Console access, Google's own data is available and explains causes. Without it, only public search results are available, which show presence but not reasons. Most link builders live in the second situation for nearly every URL they track.
How the answers are sourced
Statements about Search Console, the site: operator and Google's limits are taken from Google's own documentation, listed under sources below. Where Google is silent, as it is on the exact behaviour of inurl:, the answer says so rather than guessing. The one measured figure on this page is an IndexChex weekly average and is labelled as such.
Where to go next
Owners of a site should read the URL Inspection guide and the Page indexing report guide before reaching for third-party tools, since Google's own data explains why a page is missing as well as whether it is. People checking links on other domains should go to checking backlink indexation, then interpreting not-indexed results and from check to resubmit for what to do with the misses.
Questions and answers
What is a Google index checker?
A tool or method that reports whether a URL is in Google's index. It can be Search Console data for your own site or public search queries for any site.
What is the most reliable way to check one of my own pages?
Search Console's URL Inspection tool. It reports Google's indexed status for the URL, the last crawl and the canonical Google selected.
How do I check a page on a site I don't own?
Search Google for site: plus the full URL, then the quoted URL and an inurl: query. For many URLs, use a bulk checker that runs these queries automatically.
Why does site: say a page isn't indexed when it is?
Google documents that site: doesn't necessarily return all indexed URLs. Canonical substitution and URL variants such as trailing slashes also cause misses.
Is the result count from a site: search my number of indexed pages?
No. It is an estimate. Owners should use the Page indexing report for property-wide totals.
How many URLs can Search Console inspect?
Google mentions a per-property daily limit in the web tool. The Search Console API publishes 2,000 URL inspections a day and 600 a minute per site.
How accurate are index checkers?
It depends on how many query forms they use and how strictly they match results. IndexChex's weekly measurement on recurring URL sets puts its own checker at about 96% accurate on average as of October 2026; other tools publish their own figures, if any.
How soon after publishing should I check?
Google says new content can take a few days to be indexed. A first check after a day or two and a second several days later avoids counting slow pages as failures.
What does 'Crawled - currently not indexed' mean?
Google fetched the page but has not added it to the index. It is a Search Console status, and the page may be indexed later or not at all.
Can an index checker make a page indexed?
No. Checking only observes. Getting a page crawled requires a sitemap, Request indexing for owners, or an external submission service for third-party URLs.
